What are emotions? Art emotions in art emotions? Why do people enjoy artistic emotions which they would not enjoy in real life? How do masters from the performing arts understand emotions, including their genesis, nature and expressionHow does technology impact the logic of the emotional world?

Ellen Winner

Ellen Winner is Professor of Psychology at Boston College and Senior Research Associate at Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education. She directs the Arts and Mind Lab, which focuses on cognition in the arts in typical and gifted children as well as adults. She is the author of over 200 articles and four books--Invented Worlds: The Psychology of the Arts (1982), The Point of Words: Children's Understanding of Metaphor and Irony (1988), Gifted Children: Myths and Realities (1996), and How Art Works: A Psychological Exploration (2019)—and co-author of Studio Thinking: The Real Benefits of Visual Arts Education  (2007), Studio Thinking 2: The Real Benefits of Visual Arts Education (2013), and Studio Thinking from the Start: The K-8 Art Educator's Handbook (2018). She has served as President of APA's Division 10, Psychology and the Arts in 1995-1996, and received the Rudolf Arnheim Award for Outstanding Research by a Senior Scholar in Psychology and the Arts from Division 10 in 2000. She is a fellow of APA Division 10 and of the International Association of Empirical Aesthetics. 

 

Yue GUO (郭月)

 

 

Actress from Mainland China, born on September 15, 1991 in Tangshan City, Hebei Province, graduated from the Director Department of China Academy of Drama. Her main works include the TV series "Emergency Room Story," "Undercover" "Super-teenage Code" "Nu-erhong" "Yu-jie Returns," and feature films "Roadside Picnic," "Mother's Portrait," "When Will You Come Again," among others. She won the best actress in the 25th Beijing University Student Film Festival in 2017 by the short film "Xiao Ying." In 2021, she won the Locarno International Film Festival Independent Critics Association Best Actress Award for her role as Mindy in the thriller "Magic Earth."

 

Mark Solms

                                                              
 

Mark Solms is a South African psychoanalyst and neuropsychologist. He was born on 17 July 1961 in Lüderitz in Namibia. He currently holds the Chair of Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital (Departments of Psychology and Neurology) and is the President of the South African Psychoanalytical Association. He is also Research Chair of the International Psychoanalytical Association (since 2013). His main research area is the neuroscience of cognition and emotion and he tries to innovate psychoanalysis with a practical and synthetic perspective. His representative book is The Hidden Spring: A Journey to the Source of Consciousness.

 

Chao YANG (杨超)

 

Chao YANG is a renowned Chinese film director and producer. He is also a professor in the Department of Directing, National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. He is the director of celebrated films including Run Away, which won the Cinefondation at 2001 Cannes Film Festival, Passages, which won special award of Golden Camera at 2004 Cannes Film Festival, and Crosscurrent, which was nominated in the competition of Berlin Film Festival and won the Silver Bear for best artistic contribution. He was also nominated for the Director of the Year by the China Directors Association. He is the producer of Girls Always Happy, which was nominated for the best debut film at Berlin Film Festival and won the Firebird Award at Hong Kong International Film Festival, and Give Me a Ride, which won the Best Director Award at Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Yuan YUAN (袁园)

Yuan YUAN graduated from Beijing Film Academy with a degree in photography. She is an independent documentary filmmaker, and art critic of contemporary photography. She has long been involved in various social activism video projects, and now lives and works in Beijing.

 

She has been involved in video-related projects for NGOs since 2004, and has been a lecturer at the China Queer University Documentary Camp for 8 sessions since 2012. Since 2007, she has been involved in the founding of Pink Space (2007), an NGO advocating for gender minority rights, and has created and curated a series of photography works, including Photography of Marriage Acts of Same-Sex Couples in Qianmen, Beijing (2009), Shan Nv Jin Wa: Group Exhibition of Works by Women and Children Living with HIV/AIDS (2011), and At this moment, I want to be (2013) which won a special award at the International Pride Photography Award in the Netherlands. She has been working on independent documentaries since 2008, and her main works include The Lucky One (26 minutes) and Our Marriages: Lesbians Marry Gay Men (81 minutes). Since 2018, she has been giving lectures on the interpretation and theoretical analysis of contemporary photography, and has now held more than 230 courses online.

Rui ZHU (朱锐)

He is Distinguished Professor at the School of Philosophy, Renmin University of China, Visiting Professor at Texas State University, and Chief Researcher at the The Interdisciplinary Center for Philosophy and Cognitive Science, Renmin University of China. His research areas include philosophy of mind, neuroaesthetics, Plato, and comparative philosophy. He has been a Distinguished Professor at Shenzhen University, a tenured Professor in the Department of Philosophy and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Lake Forest College, an Assistant Professor at Texas State University, and an Assistant Professor at Peking University. He returned to China in 2018 after having spent nearly three decades in the United States. He is dedicated to the promotion of interdisciplinary science including neuroaesthetics.
